Fast forward to after WWII. Eisenhower had seen the autobahn and remembered what it was like trying to slog a convoy through mud back in the day. if the commies ever invaded we would have been up shit's creek because of the sheer vastness of the country, especially the west.
I think that most Americans don't really fully appreciate the awesome logistical feat that is the Interstate Highway System and how it shaped the modern economy which we all benefit from.
