One thing from all this research and exposure is the amount of people who are known to each other, married to each other, and/or related to each other with regard to the swamp.

I am astounded by the "interbreeding" between all of these actors.

Can this be normal for presumable random groups of people on average?

Nope. It's just like the old European nobility. Inbreeding is a serious problem for these people and I'd say it has been for about 2 or 3 generations now, judging by all the health and cognitive defects amongst the main power brokers.

"normal" would be like 1/1000th of this.

even in small towns in isolated areas it's not this bad.

Thanks for the clarity. I just find it incredible to read a story about one part of the swamp or another and find that all the people are either connected by blood or matrimony.

That is crazy.
