It does raise the one element I disliked about TNG that I didn't quite recognize until semi-recently when I tried to convince my wife to give the show a chance. Especially in the first seasons, it's like they were performing a broadway play but as a TV show.

Keep in mind they did a lot of their casting with stage actors.
Yes, I believe that's correct. This might be part of why so few Star Trek actors had any film success beyond the series.
