The logic behind it is to that the former tends to lead to dehumanization, whereas labeling people as "people" first prevents that. "People with disability" vs "Disabled people." etc., etc.
It's clearly not always grammatically viable, and the idea that we need a label for all non-white people, and that they are "of color" is absurd, but I agree with the intention behind the reorder. For the same reason that I would use the term "black people" over "blacks."
If it sounds like a term that could be used to label animals, it is ultimately dehumanizing (think racial slurs like "wetback"), and ought to be language avoided by any thinking person.
People are people first. I don't believe that is a Leftist agenda. Seems like a weird hill to die on while the Left is simultaneously arguing that gender is a social construct, but also you can be born the wrong gender. Or that pedophilia is fine and calling out sexual degeneracy is bullying at best and domestic terrorism at worst.
Weird choice, OP.
Don’t say smart people, say people of intelligence. Anything else makes their intelligence their primary characteristic, and that makes them seem better than other people. Artistic people is discriminatory to those lacking creativity. Criminals should be people of crime, their personhood should come first. Orwell called, he wants his terms back.
