Interesting, I just finished reading a book called "Blind Man's Bluff"....it's about the history of submarine operations and espionage operations going back to almost the beginning of sub warfare and well after the end of the Cold War. Our subs were so superior to those of the USSR and we much quieter, that they sometimes could sail right into the Soviet's submarine naval bases without the Soviets knowing.
We also found underwater cables near these naval bases and "tapped" them for some seriously important espionage....we had a window right into the messages and thoughts of the Soviet military.
The book also details a few collisions we had with Soviet subs.
It's fascinating reading.... if you're a war history buff, you should definitely add it to your reading list.
