Off topic, but with all the tension and stress of the current news cycle many like to take a break and decompress with a good movie. Perhaps we can have a discussion of our favorite "good movies" and/or suggestions that others may not have seen.
"Good movie" is subjective, let me define "good" as any work that holds up or demonstrates the American way, Freedom and Liberty the values of western Christian society and individual responsibility. Movies that when finished are uplifting and inspire.
In short movies with a good message, not the current era of demoralization porn hollyweird is making. Cinema is powerful, why not use the power for good?!
Here are a few of my favorites and why.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. (1939) - Watched only recently, amazing how the plot of a movie from 1939 can be so painfully relevant in modern day. Themes of a corrupt media monopoly, DC swampiness and an interesting personal army for Mr. Smith.
The Edge. (1997) - Themes of human endurance and survival, overcoming the impossible.
Tombstone. (1993) - Great contemporary Western movie, men actually acting like men and women drinking too much Laudanum.
White Squall (1996) - I'm sure most have already seen, but an interesting film none the less. Coming of age meets natural disaster. Nice bell they have on the bridge :D
The Lives of Others. (2006) -Subtitled, protagonist is an East German Stasi officer watching a dissident group. Very interesting look at how evil can be formed into a system and formalized. Honestly a dark movie but it makes an incredibly strong point about the duality of man, the heaven and hell that lives inside all of us. As a whole piece it's an amazing movie, even when thinking of it now I would swear someone is cutting onions nearby.
What are your favorite examples of uplifting movies that demonstrate good values?
Starship Troopers 1997 good fun and politically deep The Sand Pebbles 1966 a study in war, service, loyalty, and stoicism The Last temptation of Christ 1998 the spiritual journey from hell to heaven Hereafter 2010 being true to oneself in the face of death Contact 1997 a sense of the reality that exists beyond us Children of Men 2006 selfless service against the deep state The Thin Red line 1998 the knowledge of heaven in the midst of war
i think this is a good idea, OP. Be good every once in a while to repeat this suggestion. we all need a break in these unprecedented times.
Heck ya, Starship Troopers is most excellent. Sarragon of Akkad made a great yt video the politics of Starship Troopers, longer than the actual movie, a deep dive into the ideas Heinlein put forward and how the director of the movie missed the mark in such a hilarious way that he accidentally made a cult classic .
Will check out Sand Pebbles, films of this era have been very refreshing.
Thanks!
