PSALM 108. A song. A psalm of David.
Theme: Victory in God's strength. With God's help, we can do more than we think.
Author: David
1 My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul. 2 Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. 3 I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. 4 For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. 6 Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered. 7 God has spoken from his sanctuary: “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth. 8 Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah is my scepter. 9 Moab is my washbasin, on Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.” 10 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? 11 Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us and no longer go out with our armies? 12 Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless. 13 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.
Study Notes:
108:1ff The conclusions from the two previous psalms have been put together to make this psalm. The first five verses are quoted from Psalm 57:7-11, and the next eight verses (108:6-13) are from Psalm 60:5-12.
108:9 Moab, Edom, and Philistia were Israel's enemies to the east, south, and west, respectively. They despised the Israelites and Israel's God.
108:13 Do our prayers end with requests for help to make it through stressful situations? David prayed not merely for rescue, but for victory. With God's help we can claim more than mere survival, we can claim victory! Look for ways God can use your distress as an opportunity to show his mighty power.
Yesterday, with God's help, I worked diligently on my chores to completion. And, then there were more. Isn't that the way it goes? How do we ever handle it all? We pray to God and rest in him for just a bit, and keep on persevering. We yell in our anger, cry in our pain, and then pray for God's forgiveness and strength, rest in him a bit, and keep on persevering. Day by day. Breathe. Moment by moment. Breathe.
Oh, Lord, thank you for your strength, thank you that you are almighty. Help us seek the opportunities you provide for us to work for you. Please, Lord, don't let our hearts grow cold and hard. Keep us grounded in your love. In Jesus' holy name, I pray. Amen. I
