how did he pay for his rent/mortgage and utilities?
Write a check and mail it.
Isn’t the point he’s trying to make by using cash, to cut out the bank? If you write a check from the bank you may as well use the credit card too.
It's about cash, not the banks. Cash means freedom. Don't use credit cards. If they ban cash, everything you buy can and will be traced. This includes the pitchfork you might want to purchase to go after your tyrannical government.

We were on vacation a few years ago at a dude ranch. I made the deposit by sending a check per their request. When we were settling up, they told us they would discount the balance if we wrote a check. The previous year they had paid $19K in fees to Visa for the convenience of Visa. I gladly wrote a check.
My rent, utilities, phone and car insurance are direct deposit. Not sure how to get away from that yet. It either auto-pay for me---or forget to pay and pay late fees or have my phone turned off---again because I forgot it.
But I think just using cash for purchases like groceries and eating out and buying personal items is a good start for most of us.
Old school guy here: you've got two alternatives:
Every month you drive to the local office for each utility and pay them cash (assuming you've got a local office to drive to for each bill)
Or write a check and mail it in each month. Problem with this one is you're back to square one, as a check is no different than a debit card.
I agree. It's always good to have cash on hand. Never know what may happen and it can be a life saver in an emergency.
