The thing about a red dot, that I think you're missing, is you don't have to be lined up square with the rifle like a scope.
Just put the dot on the target and fire away. The optics of a good one will keep the dot on target as you move your head around while keeping the rifle pointed at the same spot. If it doesn't, it's trash. Try that with a 1-4x20 scope.
However, there are no cross hairs and batteries die, so you gotta have some backup iron sights and batteries. There's no way around that fact. My solution is pop rear sight, A2 front sight, and a Magpul STR stock with some free fresh CR2 on the left side and CR123 on the right side.
And I don't keep it an a safe. What the fuck good would it do in there? Hell nah! It's beside my bed with 5 30 rounds mags of green tips.
Oh I keep the necessary tools by the bed too, the safe is for overflow tools, wink wink.
Thanks for your opinions on red dots... maybe I will revisit the subject.
I went from under the bed, to the closet, right past the gun safe, to the gun room. I would rather have them displayed on a peg wall than hidden in a 'safe'.
