Going to church doesn’t mean somebody’s a Christian anymore than sitting in your garage means you’re a car. Believing in your heart that Jesus paid the price for our sin on the cross, and that we can be reconciled with the Father through Jesus’ sacrifice - and accepting that He did that for you - is what being a Christian is all about. There are a lot of people who claim to be Christians, but the Bible says we become “Christians” when we are “born-again” by inviting the Holy Spirit to come into our life, and by accepting the sacrifice Jesus made for us and turning away from our own desires and asking Him to be the Lord of our life.
