They have maps plotted by timing and speed and depth. That way they don’t have to use their sonar and give away their positions. Me thinks the chi-coms are putting things in the water in known path routes. Could be steel structures bigger but similar to the beach anti tank traps, or maybe even dumping more rocks and debris like they did to create that artificial island. Good idea to protect your coast line.
