No he's legitimately that incompetent and stupid. This is what happens when you give kids participation trophies. He's just used to being able to get plea deals off people who are in jail and desperate to get out to salvage their lives, while working with his buddies at the public defenders office to screw them hard and dirty. He very well could be extremely inexperienced with real, actual trials with a competent defense.
