The materials seem to be directly on the transducers... I imagine to achieve the same effect without contact you'd need a strong magnetic field. Just being loud music probably wouldn't cut it.

Also, look at the water stream. Is water affected by magnetic fields? That is something you can reproduce on your own.
True enough, I was mostly thinking of the ferrofluid. I think being magnetic they're more affected by the magnetism than the frequency/volume.
