I do think there are side effects and it's fair to say it might have been rushed, but if the intention was thinning the herd, it doesn't seem to be that effective in my opinion. I totally agree that it's an unnecessary risk for a meme virus, but if there was actual malicious intention to kill then I don't think it's succeeding in that regard.
