Lets for the sake of discussion assume that this 'you have to honorably duel with your attacker on equal terms' nonsense was real.

How did this apply when you are a shop assistant and a thug with a concealed weapon corners you and opens fire on you? Or when you shortcut through the wrong neighborhood at night and a passerby tries to get behind you and beat you in the back of your head? Or calls in their gang to do the same?

Not possible, and your attacker will never give you the opportunity for any equality with their assault on you. So why should they get the same opportunity in return?
