The word that virologists used to call their interpreted bogey man was 'virus'. The word 'Virus' comes from the Latin vīrus meaning -- “slime, poison”. What these human lab rats actually saw was the inner guts of the cell pouring through the ruptured dead cell membrane and pouring out 'slime', and 'poison'. Except this is actually a very natural process of a dead cell. The slime and poison signals scavenger cells to clean up the mess and get rid of the dead cell debris.
