The author of "The String of Pearls" (the story of Sweeney Todd) and coincidentally, "Varney the Vampire," was James Malcolm Rymer (1814-1884). "Varney the Vampire" was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's "Dracula."

Rymer became a Freemason of the United Industrious Lodge of Canterbury in 1862.
