It might appear that way because he has to plead his case and innocence to a public that may not be aware of all the attacks going on, but by virtue of those attacks have a reflexive negative feeling toward him. If he stays quiet, people would just accept the lies or be uncertain about him.
Lin tried multiple ties contacting Mike and Joe to clear up a bunch of small things that dont mean anything by itself, but when they pile up, they raise eyebrows. Neither of them have responded.
After Patrick's video - in which he takes it upon himself to defend Mike and Joe, but by belittling the points Lin has made. Given that video, it makes sense Lin released this text message, as long as it was really from Mike. That part, I am not sure.
If these two wanted to communicate they can do so privately. The fact that this was public means it is for another audience.
