My mom explained it to me in the early 2000s as an er nurse.
Long story short there are two main factors. I'd say the first is the lawyer/insurance side of it. The amount of insurance any given doctor or group (not sure the best way to phrase that) has to carry is asinine, and it's come about because of the frivolous lawsuits and lawfare being waged. Even something like a risky procedure in which the patient likely won't make it, and the patient knows that going into the surgery, could result in huge settlements.
The second is our generous non refusal of emergency patients. It's fine for citizens, but what breaks that system are illegal immigrants. That's in itself is a twofold issue in that these people go there for basic doctor visit shit aka non emergency like flu symptoms, and create ignorantly long wait times. Then the other is we the citizens subsidize their er visits through either straight up taxes or through our own increased insurance rates. Maybe some pay, but certainly not all. They way mom explained it though was that the subsidizing happened largely through insurance. So we circle right back.
Either way. Crash this mother fucker into the ground. We will give them a great reset alright.
the non payment from illegals and homeless has gotten insanely worse.
insurance rates jacked up so high my deductible is like I don't have any insurance.
if you pay that off they'll send you to a local collections agency that is typically abusive. then you have to waste time and money along with playing stupid games with the collections agency just to fight it.
the last time I did this I ended up having to get an attorney involved because I'm aware of all the dumb games.

Your mother is absolutely correct in her assessment of the situation....
