Well I'm not one for wild claims, but sticking just to the science, many diseases used to be classed as polio which are now classified as something else (transverse myelitis, Coxsackie, Guillain-Barre syndrome, lead poisoning, Arsenic and DDT toxicity...). It is hypothesised that Roosevalt could have been suffering from GBS (Goldman et al - what was the cause of FDRs paralytic illness, journal of medical biography, vol 11 2003, pp233-240)
