Ok serious question here. Why don’t they build homes underground in tornado prone areas? Is it too expensive? Can’t be more expensive than rebuilding a home. Or does it rarely hit the same place ?
They do, most have basements. However, E-4 E-5 tornados will suck you out of a basement. Tornados cut into the earth 6- 7 in. deep, pulls asphalt off roads. They can hit in the same areas just not every year. I personally have seen a handful of Tornados growing up about 100 miles from Ok city. But have never had any hit my home.
In both houses/neighborhoods we lived in, basements were unusual - a couple houses had them type of thing. Tons of sandstone was part of the problem (at least in one of them).
