I like your idea, but it just leads me to more questions... like then why is there a conical 'beam' of moisture? Would the 'prism-like effect' not be expected to fill the whole image to some degree if moisture was relatively consistent?
It brings me right back around to presuming that cloud was the source of the moisture and there's an energy source independent of the sunlight at play (in other words, sunlight allows us to visualize this other energy's effect).
