For starters winters are brutal, cold and windy. Streets are like San Francisco - but Icy, snowy, steep and HILLY - being situated on the bluffs/hills of Superior
But outside of the city are lots of lakes, cabins, snowmobiling, skiing - downhill and cross country. Hockey is YUGE.
Rest of the year its pretty decent. Lots of hiking, biking, trails, hunting and fishing. Big time 'hippy culture' up there too. Lots of outdoor activities.
If you not into any winter activities during the 4-5 months of cold, wind and ice, then your probably going to miserable. If you are then you might enjoy it.
Depends on what you like.

Never been to SF so I don't know what you're talking about with the roads. Also I would rather deal with extreme cold than extreme heat.
I would highly suggest taking a visit there before you make any decisions.
