My mother always made this for New Year's Day to have good luck for the year. I think she just liked to eat blackeyed peas. LOL
Here's a recipe with lots of details on how. BTW, I've always soaked my peas but apparently you don't have to, just cook longer. I haven't tried this.
You can use bacon or ham since jowls can be hard to find. Food Lion has them and sometimes Walmart.

I’ve heard it’s black eyed peas & cabbage.
I love cabbage. I'll be making cabbage and noodles (not together) with the ham today.
Here's how I make cabbage. Chop one head of cabbage into quarters or smaller, one onion diced coarsely, ham drippings or a couple of packets of Goya ham flavor or in a pinch some butter, lots of pepper and some salt. Add water, not enough to cover because it will be too much once the cabbage softens. Simmer until tender.
BTW I made the blackeyed peas without soaking yesterday and they were perfect.
