Does anyone here have suggestions on a known and reputable source to use to convert 401k to precious metals? My worry is that they could be traps to trick up patriots, not secure our metals and give us an “oops” we never actually had your gold or silver. How do you know the metals actually exist?

Check out Sprott physical silver (PSLV) and Sprott physical gold (PHYS). They have their own vaults and take delivery of precious metals that they buy.
