I’ll accept your word that this happened and offer a serious comment. You’ve got to “read your gut response,” and you did. You backed off this confrontation that your “gut” was telling you would escalate fast. Our brain processes things outside our conscious awareness, and that “gut response” should be attended to. Your conscious brain can over-ride your “gut response,” but when its sending signals, the “gut” should be acknowledged. You made the right call in this situation.
