Because, he taught the lessons he learnt to Trump. Also, even though he turned to the dark side, I would assume he did some crucial things the White Hats needed for their long term plan.

Trump has learnt from JFK, Nixon and Reagan. This is a culmination of success from lessons learnt from decades of failures.
