They lost 3% of their base and are begging the remaining 97%? Did that 3% represent 90% of their sales?

3% of their email subscribers. Most email like that is total spam and no one ever opens it. An open rate of 10-15% would be exceptional and I doubt their's is that good. So if 3% opened and left, that would be 20 - 33% of their active customers.
