Back when I was a kid, we raised hogs, cattle, corn and grains. A portion of what we grew was used to feed the livestock. The pig and cattle generated liberal amounts of "fertilizer" which we gathered up every week, and hauled out into the fields to spread over the crops.
It was amazing how little fertilizer we actually had to purchase. Rotate the crops every few years, take soil samples in for collection and analysis with the State Department of Agriculture to see what you needed, and respond accordingly.
