Saw that movie. What did ‘laces out’ mean? I don’t follow sports or understand or care about them.

A football has "laces" on one side. When trying for a field goal, one guy holds the football upright on the ground. The kicker wants the "laces" facing the goal posts, not the side of the football that his foot is about to smack.

The guy holding the football should quickly rotate the ball so the laces are out (towards the goal-posts), so the laces don't interfere with the kick accuracy.
