Here's a simple test. Go to your local Walmart at mid afternoon, mid week. Do they have two or three of a long bank of registers open and a line with about 20-30 people in line at the self checkout? Are there still gaping holes in random sections of shelves? Did you see this many people grocery shopping in the middle of the day before covid when employment was high?
I was at a local Walmart day before yesterday, went to registers at about 2 pm. Three regular registers open, all with long lines. About 25 people in line at the self checkout. These were all young, not retirement age men and women. Why weren't they at work? Why didn't Walmart have more people working registers? Why was there plenty of bread but no crackers?
Well today was one checkout open and everyone, customers at the self checkout. Not a whole lot of folks in the store. Shelves were not quite full. That tells me jobs aren’t coming back that fast.
