I do believe itβs at the least overblown, but is it not true that Russia is amassing armed forces near the Ukrainian border? And they sort of already have a track record of invading Ukraine so not sure this tweet is a fair analysis
There was no amassing anything at the border. There were regular sorts of movements and exercises like about a hundred miles from the border.
And you might think this is close.
But Moscow is 250 miles away from the border. And obviously Russia has a lot of force concentration on its positions to the west of Moscow, between Europe, NATO, Ukraine and the capital.
The Russian naval movements are pretty much unprecedented. They have sortied their entire surface fleet and are moving their big iron ( Varyag and Ustinov) from halfway around the world into the Eastern Med. Their amphibious ready group has also been consolidated and is sailing into the Black Sea with however many battalion landing teams they carry. This would be an extremely expensive undertaking if done for no reason at all.
Right, but they're moving ships, including the third and final "big iron" missile cruiser out of Crimea into the Mediterranean, that's not a weekend trip.
I.e. moving it from the one place where it could support a Russian invasion to one where it can't.
This isn't done for no reason. They outright stated that the increased and unprecedented activity in the region by NATO ships and provocations like what happened with the US destroyer (USS Porter?) required a response so that the NATO ships wouldn't feel safe. And it's also training for a seemingly probable future conflict by the most critical line of defense against US force projection Russia has.
Like if those three ships are enough to sink a US carrier or two, the US is never sending carriers within 500 miles of their location.
