Using any animal could enhance the fear narrative. "OMG it's in dogs! Quick, kill/vaccinate all dogs." But you may need some protein, at least nitrogen. So, inanimate things that were never and could not be alive to be infected. Soda crackers, for instance. Tree sap. City water after it has set enough for chlorine to evaporate.
