I'd consider the current regime to be an impediment to "prepared". Until we have a MAGA president in office, the US shouldn't be doing anything other than cleaning house.

Ultimately, if we put troops up there, Joey Bribes would have them help Trudeau crush resistance. Our troops would be in a "just following orders" situation and have to choose between their morality and their livelihood. Nothing about that situation would be good.
