Of course how people use the hard data isn't up to them. If somebody uses the data incorrectly then it could be called out and criticized. Instead they just hide it, which just makes it obvious that they are actually hiding the data because they don't want the truth known.

Exactly. They're not afraid of misinformation. They're afraid of correctly interpreting the data and finding out that CDC's been the source of the "misinformation." Also, this is why the Scottish Public Health Service just did the same thing.
