During slavery, this was an actual thing. Skilled craftsmen slaves (blacksmiths, wainwrights, etc.) would be sent off on their own to the cities and then mail most of the money they earned back home to their masters. So long as they kept the money flowing, they were allowed a measure of independence. That's not so different than taxation.
