As a kid in the 70’s during Carter’s oil embargo mess, gas was expensive and rationed. We would drive to the line at the gas station, turn off the engine and push it through the line. Not sure what else to expect except to pay a lot.
I remember the flags indicating whether or not the station had gas - red no, green yes. Then they went to the odd/even last number on your license plates. I remember that actually worked better. But that was back when someone actually pumped your gas for you.
I was too young to remember details. Mom would pack us snacks for the wait. It’s all in perspective. It was fun for me and my brother, mom and dad not do much.
I remember pumping your gas, checking oil and washing the window, then give you pages of green or blue chip stamps to redeem for items for your house. Good OL days.
