Voter ID itself isn't racist. I think the worry is how it is implemented.
What the hell does that mean?
The people who argue that voter ID is racist aren't saying that the ID itself is racist. The worry is how it is implemented, particularly across rural areas that may not have state/federal facilities nearby. It all sort of stems from the worry of history repeating itself, as many tactics have been in place previously for voting that specifically targeted black people, so hopefully you can understand that people are cautious.
If voter IDs were freely and widely distributed to all legal citizens eligible to vote then I don't think there's as much of an issue
In your last paragraph, you understand that voter ID means the same thing as a driver's license, passport, or worker visa right?
Those things ARE freely and widely available AND already distributed to all legal citizens. I don't think I've met a single legal minority adult who did not have a driver's license in this country.
To suggest that black people and Mexicans are intellectually incapable of acquiring these things themselves, IS the only genuine racist thing from this entire debate.
Well, in that case, that's a bad thing, because things like a driver's license and passport you have to pay for. You shouldn't have to pay for the ability to vote. I also know plenty of people without drivers licenses and/or passports, white and non-white.
You also seem to misunderstand my point. I'm not suggesting that anyone is intellectually incapable of acquiring these things. But there is a difference between knowing how to get something like this, and being able to.
