This is almost viewable from my home.
I went and took a look this morning when I dropped my son off for school. I’m assuming it was a major equipment failure otherwise I can’t imagine this happening where it is.
I’d hate to be that pilot
The channels in that area are huge and deep. Extremely well marked but since a pilot is required to bring these ships up the bay it’s not like
It’s someone who’s is not familiar with the route.
I’ve lived her a long time and this is first one I know of. In my opinion, baring anything nefarious it would have to be equipment failure.
Or complete incompetence but that’s less likely.
But what do I know? I’m just a recreational boater that’s very familiar with the area. So it’s anyone’s guess
Also I just grabbed my chart where it’s located the channel is .1 nautical miles wide. If you want to check it on a map it’s approx .7 miles north of Gibson island ( one of the wealthiest communities in the country) and almost directly east of downs park.
What is worth mentioning is if this was a mechanical issue it is only 6 nautical
Miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. That would have been an absolute disaster.

Why do you say you can’t imagine? Not a shallow area? Off course? Seriously curious on your take. Thanks.

Oh and I’m guesstimating here that it’s about 10 nautical miles north from the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
