Not all banks and credit unions are the same - so do your homework. The one I use has no account minimums for the basic savings account. I also have two separate checking accounts. No monthly fee.

One I was in years ago required a minimum kept in, as a share, that wasn't available for withdrawal unless I closed out, but it was a tiny amount.
