hmmm... wonder why they chose that book to be there in the shot...

It was republished in 1988 as a mass market paperback.

Two of a Kind: The Hillside Stranglers was released on paperback in 1987.

As the film was shot in 1988 in Los Angeles, mostly on location, it's likely just a coincidence. This was an outdoor magazine stand.
