I think it's more likely that the white hats got ahold of Hunter and said "so, you know how you'll never be as good as your dead brother in your dad's eyes, despite all of the illegal shit you do on his behalf ...?".
Right. But they had the laptop. They know his signature. Of course, there's also the possibility that he dropped the laptop off in a drug-induced haze and forgot about it. Seems unlikely given that he's bothering to talk to a prostitute about his concerns with his laptop being stolen. I hope we know the truth of what happened someday--not just with this, but with everything. What the white-hat plan was and how they did it. Hard to get my mind around it all.
Occam's razor would suggest Hunter's dumbass left the laptop at the repair shop and was too drugged out and distracted to pick it up.
He kept procrastinating and planning to do so, but eventually the 60 day period expired and he forgot because meth time+ endless money+ sex with prostitutes/siblings= weeks fly by.
Then, once the laptop story started breaking, he couldn't stop it so he had to rationalize and create a version of reality where losing the laptop was NOT his fault.
He blamed some sketchy drug dealers he interacted with in the past, remembered a few of them spoke what sounded like Russian, and he starts repeating this fabricated mental delusion to all the people he interacts with (mostly prostitutes), in order to solidify this warped version of events.
As a former addict, this is probably what happened to Hunter. When you're an addict and you do stupid shit because you're drugged out, you will rationalize the stupid things as having happened for reasons out of your control, ESPECIALLY when you're not trying to get off drugs.
Its a defense mechanism to continue justifying ones drug use. "No man i swear, even if i wasn't doing drugs, they would have STILL gotten the laptop. Those shady Russian coke dealers man. Can't trust em".
Okay, so what if white hats got a hold of Hunter's laptop and they took it to the computer repair place?

H signed some kind of form I believe when he initially dropped it off. I remember seeing a signature in a picture from an autist research post.
