I'm old too. The veterans you heard from, unfortunately, were fed the same propaganda we all have been. Eisenhower intentionally led his troops into the camps full of emaciated, dead prisoners...and guards as well...in order to manipulate them by spinning a false narrative. The Allied bombing campaign absolutely obliterated the German supply channels to the camps, and in the final months of the war, those who didn't starve in the camps were at grave risk for typhus. All the b.s. about using human skin for lampshades, using rendered humans for soap, etc., etc., was a staged event by Eisenhower urged on by his Jewish advisers. This is why U.S. soldiers came back with stories that matched the propaganda.

There were, in fact, atrocities on the Red Army side, in their camps. In fact, American soldiers were captured and sent further east to the gulags, never to be heard from again. But none of that occurred by the Germans -- they needed morale high in order to keep the war machine running. There is absolutely no evidence of mass exterminations, graves, etc., and the gas chamber theory, ovens, etc., is laughable. The math doesn't add up, nor do the blueprints to the buildings. Nothing matches up with the reality of those camps.

Eisenhower feared General Patton was going to go public with his observations after he returned home. Everyone has heard his quote, "We fought the wrong enemy." He was assassinated, and more recently, the assassin came forward admitting to his role in what happened. The car accident was a ruse to get Patton into the hospital, where he was given a lethal injection.
