Personally I like to argue how the north had been imposing increasing tariffs on the south because the south was an economic powerhouse due to climate differences to the north and the greedy north couldn't stand it. The Civil War started well before Lincoln was in office. The only reason he even offered freedom to slaves was to bolster the army of the north. Ever hear of a front line?
