I don't think this was faked. Why? Do you really think Smith is going to want the 2022 Oscars to be known as "the night that Will Smith bitch slapped Chris Rock"? He's up for a top award. This totally undermined his winning. On a side note, Chris Rock is welcomed into the Black Eye Club on world wide television.
