He associated with Nazis and openly backed hitters plans in the 30s.

Honestly Hitler was seen as an underdog of sorts after the putsch. I would really read up on American politicians that also were channeling money to Hitler. Before they realized it was bad PR a hell of a lot of people liked how he was industrializing Germany and all.
