Looks like they were embedded with Azov and Ukraine Marines in Mariupol. In their last stand they retreated to the giant steel mill industrial area, but when it started becoming hopeless with Russian forces closing in, Ukrainian military sent helos on a suicide extraction mission for foreign units.

France/UK special forces did the same thing fighting alongside ISIS in Syria, but they were successfully extracted IIRC.
