They truly tried to make him seem crazy. Given what he may have seen/witnessed makes it easy to understand his drunken ramblings. It's hard enough to deal with just the thought of it let alone be witness to it.

The only rant that I ever heard from him was in regards to the Jews.

Didn't Jesus say something about a prophet never being welcome in his own town?
