I don't understand the whole "Woke" reference

Since "Woke" is the past tense of "Awakened," why is the Cabal referred to as woke instead of us? Shouldn't we be the ones who are "Woke" if we're awake? It seams to me that the Cabal should have some other kind of nickname.
