Some managers, are just sadists. Some managers, seem to feel that they have the ability, because they are a manager; to subject their employees to whatever they want to do, out of some sense of superiority.
I have witnessed it, and if I were in that jury, the reward would be exponentially higher. Why?
Because, this manager's Director knew of his sadistic, bootlicker's tendencies; yet opted to do nothing about it. Now the CEO is going to have to cut a check for $450K, and is going to install a Corrective Action Plan, so this crap never happens again.
The CEO now knows exactly who caused this problem, and who tolerated it. He now knows that a precedence has been set. If I were the CEO, there would be one meeting, at 8am with these individuals, HR and security and that meeting would be over within 10 minutes with 2 immediate terminations, and security escort off the property - so EVERY EMPLOYEE could witness it.
Being humiliated in public, is not a part of the job description. Employees are hired to perform a task. As a manager, you may ask them if they would like a Birthday, Anniversary, Awards or Retirement Party; that is reasonable. But if the employee says "no"; that is the end of the matter. The employee owes you NO EXPLANATION whatsoever. Drop it, and move on.
